Monterey Cruiser Challenge

The Potter Yachters, California’s largest trailer sailor club, invites you to join our 26 th
annual Monterey Cruiser Challenge set for Aug 1-3, 2025. As of today, 18 boats have
signed up, including several Potters and Montys, a Sparrow 16, a Sage 17, a Vagabond
17, and a Malbec 18. Registration is FREE.
The Cruiser Challenge is a competition for trailerable cabin boats not designed primarily
for racing. Past participants have sailed boats ranging in size from Guppy 13s to
Santana 2023s, but most are either Potter 15/19s or Monty 15/17s.
Race day is Saturday, Aug. 2. Rules are casual. Participants will include seasoned race
veterans as well as novices. Conditions on the water could be challenging.
Some of us will launch at Moss Landing and sail into Monterey on Friday Aug. 1,
returning on Sunday Aug. 3. This 14-mile passage takes 3-4 hours and often features
whale-watching. It is suitable for intermediate and advanced sailors accustomed to
ocean conditions. The second option is to launch and retrieve in Monterey.
Hotels are plentiful but expensive in Monterey, but the municipal marina charges visiting
vessels just $1/boat ft. per night and offers clean restrooms with showers. Skippers
launching in Moss Landing are welcome to arrive a day or two early and dock at the
Elkhorn Yacht Club. (The waters off Moss Landing offer some of the best whale
watching in California).
A registration form and additional information are linked below. Directions, parking info,
etc. will be posted on our website in June, so stay tuned.
