The Practical Instructor Exam (PIE) is a key assessment to becoming an Open Water Instructor (OWI). Practical teaching is often regarded as the central skill of teaching diving.

After successful completion of both elements of the PIE, you will be awarded the qualification of Practical Instructor (if you have not yet taken the TIE), or Open Water Instructor.

On the Practical Instructor Exam, you will be expected to:

- Present a 45-minute practical lesson in open water. You will be given the topic 30 minutes prior.
- Complete a rescue drill sequence from the DTP.
