WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Get the practical experience to go with your theoretical understanding from the eLearning course. Under expert guidance, walk around Portland town examining the numerous cannon and practice your recording skills.
Please note, that there is prerequisite theoretical learning to complete beforehand which also costs £50 eLearning Cannon Recording and Research course.
This is one of the optional pre-requisites for the Gun Rocks fieldwork in summer 2026
WHO IS THE TUTOR?
Nick Reed is a NAS tutor and cannon aficionado who runs the Big Cannon Project.
WHO'S IT FOR?
Anyone who wants to learn just enough about cannon to be dangerous! Can you tell your culverin from your saker? Do you want to understand a Patrick O'Brien novel or understand how many mistakes there are in Pirates of the Caribbean? This is for anyone involved in the NAS Education Programme wishing to develop their practical skills. Professional archaeologists or avocational researchers who work on archaeological sites where they are likely to find cannons will find this practical training incredible useful.
NAS members will earn 5 credits per day towards their Certificate or Award.
