West Chickamauga Creek Adventure

This 10-mile day trip explores a small but popular paddling destination.

West Chickamauga Creek winds through Walker and Catoosa counties in far northwest Georgia before entering Tennessee and joining South Chickamauga Creek. Flowing through a suburban landscape, it nevertheless retains a wild feel as it flows north toward Chattanooga and the Tennessee River.

It is another stream that is at risk of being closed to the public if the Georgia General Assembly adopts a narrow view of where the public has a right to float on Georgia’s streams.

Communities along the creek including Chickamauga and Ft. Oglethorpe, Georgia and East Ridge, Tennessee have worked cooperatively to establish the West Chickamauga Creek Water Trail with multiple developed public access points connecting more than 20 miles of the creek. Expect an intimate, winding creek with moving water and occasional Class I shoals.

Registration fees include guide services and maps and shuttle services. Rental boats can be reserved during registration.

Skill Level Required: This is a flatwater paddle with some Class I shoals. Some experience kayaking or canoeing is recommended.
