Wandering bards Mica Sun and Samara Jade bring a uniquely original (and yet ancient and familiar) weaving of oral storytelling and finely crafted song in “The Floating Kingdom,” a musical, artistic tale of reflection, journey and return.

"An old king, with hairs of white, steps through a magical doorway to recover the pieces of the Firebird — a splendid yet enigmatic being who holds the keys to his freedom – and his heart."

This central 50-minute, all-ages storytelling show dances between acting, music, puppeteering, voice, and song, with reflections on freedom, grief, friendship, aging, patriarchy, the initiatory journey, and the destruction and repair of our world.

Blending traditional, theatrical storytelling performance with original live instrumentation, music, and song, this mythic tale for our times is guaranteed to delight and entertain, entrancing the mind while stirring the waters of the soul.

The show will feature opening songs, tales, and poetry by Mica Sun and Samara Jade.

(bios and reviews below!)

“The Floating Kingdom” is a live storytelling performance of an original fable featuring original music and song, written and produced by artistic duo Mica Sun and Samara Jade – touring artists based in the mountains of Western North Carolina. It has been performed over 35 times so far at venues throughout the United States.

In the 50-minute show, Mica delivers theatrical oral storytelling accompanied by costumery, puppetry, props, and audience engagement. Samara accompanies musically with a live instrumental soundtrack, performing original songs that both entrance and engage the audience at various points throughout the story. The duo passes the spotlight back-and-forth throughout the show in this mythobardic production for our times.

In addition to the core performance, Samara and Mica bookend the story with sets of shorter original standalone songs, music, and stories, in the style of traditional singer-songwriters and tellers; as well as group sings, sharebacks, and community conversations.

REVIEWS

“This timeless tale, an exquisite weaving of Samara‘s guitar and voice, and Mica‘s powerfully embodied presence as a storyteller. An enthralling tale, rich with depth and whimsy. Carried by the seamless currents of music deep into the hearts of the audience. Such a gift! Not to be missed!"

"Such a magical evening of song and storytelling in the mythobardic production of “The Floating Kingdom” by Samara Jade and Mica Sun. Whimsical and profoundly moving, Mica and Samara took us on an epic journey that evoked both giddy laughter and heartbroken tears. This musical journey taps into the heart of the human experience: the pain of separation and self abandonment, and the path to wholeness and freedom by releasing what we cling so tightly to. Simply brilliant."

"Wanted to share how impressed I was with your performance last night. I was entranced by the story and thought the delivery was exceptional. I was really blown away at both the complexity and thoughtfulness with which the story was put together and told. Well done!"

"The Floating Kingdom was exquisite. Embodied storytelling that led us on a journey beyond old and trite expected storylines into a mythological experience that could actually guide our moral compass. Through themes of grief and justice, desire and belonging, and the cycles of time, it was crafted with poetic song, musical accompaniment, dramatic pauses that gave us time to catch our breath, and a rich tapestry of words amongst simplistic props that allowed our imagination to spark alive. I sat in my seat enraptured for the full experience, while also daydreaming what kind of stories I wanted to tell, what kind of stories our communities need. This duo is an absolute treat."
