This month’s presentation: Pioneer & Riverside Cemetery, 1850-2025
The Appleton Cemetery Association established Appleton’s first burial ground, known as Pioneer Cemetery, in 1850 on the northwest portion of what is now the Post-Crescent block — just south of the railroad tracks. It soon became clear that this downtown location was not ideal for a city cemetery and the hunt was on for a better location. The Appleton Cemetery Association chose the property where Riverside Cemetery is today for the new location and the first burial occurred in 1872. Discover the story behind Pioneer Cemetery and how it evolved into Riverside Cemetery.
Presented by Gwen Sargeant

She is currently the President of Appleton Historical Society and volunteers her time with Riverside Cemetery as well.
