Join us for a screening of Father of the Bride (1950), a heartwarming romantic comedy directed by Vincente Minnelli. Starring Spencer Tracy, Joan Bennett, and Elizabeth Taylor, the film follows a father struggling with the chaos of his daughter’s wedding preparations. Nominated for multiple Academy Awards, this timeless classic offers a humorous and touching look at family dynamics and marriage.

The exhibition First Comes Love: Courtship in the Victorian Era explores the evolution of courtship and marriage. This film offers a more mid-20th-century perspective on the emotional and social significance of weddings. Father of the Bride reflects how the shifting dynamics of love and marriage—especially for women—continued to shape family life and expectations in the 20th century.

This summer Movies on the Lawn will be a cinematic expansion of the themes explored in the Heritage House exhibition First Comes Love: Courtship in the Victorian Era (on view through June 29, 2025). Gates open at 8:00 p.m. and the screening begins at 8:30 p.m. Concessions are available at the Riverside Museum Associates’ Snack Shack (CASH ONLY). Limited on site and street parking available.
