The Shetland and Orkney basketmaking traditions are unusual within the British Isles having evolved without the use of willow. Shetland’s Kishie backpacks are traditionally made with Oat straw while Orkney’s Caisies were made with straw and a wider variety of locally available plant materials. Using these materials to fulfil various domestic, fishing and agricultural needs these baskets have evolved into a diverse and complex basketry tradition stake bundles. Over the three days we can expect to make 2-3 smaller baskets developing our skills and exploring variations in shaping and proportions.
This course is suitable for both beginners and those with some experience. The course is being held at Sages, Fore Street, Dolton weather permitting in the spacious gardens.
