Hafting a Scandinavian-type Knife (rat-tail tang or stick tang)

14 hours (weekend course)

In the second in our series on knifemaking, we will look at how to make handles for Scandinavian- type stick or rat-tail tang knives. We’ll discuss the traditional methods of making these handles from leather, birch bark, or cork; and we’ll look at the ways these were mechanically fastened onto a knife. Each student will chose a stick-tang knife blade and handle material from a few choices, cut the mortise for the tang, rough shape, and install the handle and brass guard. The finished handles will be fine sanded and polished, ready to take home.

For this class, we will use carbon-steel (not stainless) knife blades from Laurin Metalli of Kauhava Finland
