Gillian McNeil, Genetics Specialist and Public Engagement Associate for the Personal Genetics Education & Dialogue (PGED) at Harvard Medical School will discuss the various applications of genetic technologies in connection with health, ancestry, and law enforcement purposes. Technological developments in genetics have enabled people to become more informed healthcare consumers and connected to their extended family around the globe. McNeil will discuss three areas of genetics: Ancestry & Identity: The process of DNA ancestry testing as well as benefits and risks of ancestry testing; Genetics & Health: The influence of genes and environment on human health and applications of genetic technologies for health purposes; and Privacy & Law Enforcement: How DNA is used in law enforcement, with case examples to explore the capabilities and limitations of forensic DNA technology.
