Summer Institute 2025: Theorem Painting

Attendees will be taught history and techniques of this Early American Art known as Theorem Painting popular in Colonial New England from the first half of the 19th Century through the mid-1800's.

Using a series of pre-cut stencils, students will learn how to apply oil paint with brushes to a cotton velveteen fabric to create a portrait that looks hand painted and suitable for framing. Each participant will complete and take home the project. All materials supplied. Frame not included.*Design by Jean Hansen Publications, Middlebury, Connecticut.

Class will be held in the Museum Store, first floor.
