WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR BIOS
Edward Wedler
As a plein air artist, I explore the nooks and crannies of our geography on foot. I interpret and paint our urban and rural landscapes in watercolour, with a splash of ink and a dash of mixed media.
Watercolours, like jazz, can feel unpredictable, spontaneous, and complex. That’s its strength and challenge -- and its beauty. Like an adventurer, you never know what awaits or unfolds. Tradition aside, nothing beats trying out sticks, stones, dental picks, crumpled paper, and other unorthodox tools and techniques. Discovery and experiment draw me to an impressionist’s gut-view of the world.
Typically, a day can see me immersed in computer code and technology, preparing a humorous speech, exploring artificial intelligence in the arts, hiking, cartooning, or painting outdoors. As a Research Scientist and Engineer, I once studied the earth and oceans from space. That gave me a unique perspective on patterns, shapes, and colour.
The Teichert and Fisherman’s Cove Galleries in Halifax, Nova Scotia, exhibit my work. Currently, I belong to seven plein air art groups -- three in Florida and four in Nova Scotia (founding Plein Air Artists Annapolis Valley and Plein Air Artists HRM). I initiated an annual collaboration between the Urban Sketchers of Halifax and the Nova Scotia Association of Architects.
Anne Wedler:
Anne was born in Toronto. She earned an Honors BFA from York U, a BEd from U of Toronto and moved to Nova Scotia in 1983. After a career in teaching and bookselling, Anne took up painting in earnest in 2016. Anne has participated in a solo show and various group exhibits, and her works are represented in Halifax Art Galleries. Predominantly a Plein Air Oil Painter, Anne continues to attend workshops with professional artists in Canada and the USA. She has recently tented and painted on a 6,000 km trek from Nova Scotia to northern Lake Superior and back and has tented and painted in Newfoundland's Twillingate, Fogo Island and Gros Morne areas. Her love of Canadian landscapes is inspired by the travels and works of The Group of Seven. Anne is a co-founder of the Plein Air Artists of the Annapolis Valley, and The Plein Air Artists of HRM, and is a member of three Plein Air painting groups in Florida -- Peace River Painters, The Light Chasers, and Plein Air Artists of Sarasota. She has been juried several times into the Parrsboro International Plein Air Festival. Anne is a recipient of several painting awards and has paintings held in private collections in Canada, the USA, Europe, and Australia.
