Other Worlds has a long-standing commitment to political activism. We started in 2014 as a boycott of the MCA Zine Fair. At the time, the MCA had ties to Transfield Services, who ran the Manus Island and Nauru detention centres, part of Australia’s racist policy of mandatory detention of refugees. As the name suggests, Other Worlds envisions futures beyond profit and alienated labour. We believe this is the ethos at the heart of DIY zine culture, even if individual zines might not be overtly political. Zines show that we don’t need institutions to direct or organise our creativity and communities: we can do it ourselves.
We are part of an arts community that takes an active stance against racism, militarisation and colonisation, locally and internationally. Free the refugees. Free Palestine.
