Cemeteries exhibit distinctive funerary architecture through the design, iconography, and carving patterns on gravestones. Like buildings, the stewardship and preservation of these unique commemorative spaces require maintenance and careful attention to detail. Join restoration specialist Kurt Riegel and AARCH at Saranac Lake’s historic Pine Ridge Cemetery to learn about the art of restoring gravestones. In this hands-on experience, we will explore the best practices and techniques for properly cleaning, maintaining, and repairing these pieces of our past. Participants will be able to practice the basics of gravestone maintenance through Kurt’s expert guidance. We hope that this workshop will inspire attendees to contribute to the conservation of gravestones in their own communities.
This workshop is led by Kurt Riegel of Riegel Restoration.
The fee is $85 for AARCH members and $100 for non-members.
This project is funded, in part, by a grant from the National Trust Preservation Fund of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
