The Oldest Unsolved Murder in New Brunswick | Talk & Book Launch Andrew MacLean of Backyard History

On September 10th, I’ll be in Moncton giving a talk about “The Oldest Unsolved Murder in New Brunswick”!

It’s a truly mind-boggling case. Nearly a century ago, the only DFO agent ever murdered on duty was killed in Bouctouche. The federal government was outraged — not only by the killing, but by the fact that New Brunswick’s provincial government seemed in no hurry to solve it.

Recently uncovered documents show that the Premier at the time didn’t even trust his own police, calling them “rank amateurs.”
So the Premier brought in outside help — a mysterious RCMP officer known only as “Detective 35.”

After months of wrangling with Access to Information requests, I finally obtained the enigmatic Detective 35’s case file. And for the first time, the incredible true story of this long-forgotten investigation can be told.

This talk is the launch of the next Backyard History book — coming September 2025!
