First Day: Open Sew
Second Day: Open sew until the evening lecture-only covering historical information. After the evening lecture, it
would be open/free sew.
Third Day: The third day would cover the hands-on portion of cleaning gears, motor, lubrication, tension
& stitch formation, and cleaning the machine finish. After cleaning the machine, attendees have open sew.
Fourth day: Open Sew
Featherweight Maintenance Workshop description
taught by Sarah G. Baker, FeatherweightSarah.
This maintenance workshop is for Singer 221 or 222 (Featherweight) vintage machines only.
This is a hands-on and informational workshop.
You will learn (but not limited to):
-Featherweight history
-Cleaning, oiling and lubricating gears and motor
-Tension adjustments
-Stitch formation
-Cleaning and polishing machine
β Attendees will need a featherweight sewing machine in good working order, including
bobbin case, bobbin and foot controller (machines that require actual repair are not
suitable for class)
β 2 Screwdrivers: 1 that fits small precision-size screws, and 1 that fits screw heads like
the spool pin on top of the machine (Wera brand tools are highly recommended!)
β Old towel to place machine during workshop
β Flashlight
β Small bottle brush or old toothbrush for gear cleaning
β 2 spools of same weight, different color thread to test tension and stitching
β Small scissors
β Lubricant for vintage machines (like βSew-Retroβ grease from The Featherweight Shop)
β Notepad and pen
Tune up kit ($ 42 + tax, cash, cc, check):
β Felt Drip pad
β LED bulb
β Superbelt
β Foot bed cushions
Optional items:
Apron
Nitrile or rubber gloves if skin sensitive to kerosene
Small bowl to keep loose parts
