History

Celebrated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, Wortley Top Forge is renowned for its history in iron-working in Britain and more specifically South Yorkshire.

Wortley Top Forge is a Water Powered Iron Forge whose history can be traced back to 1640, it was built by Sir Francis Wortley. The site has been used for various processes but it is best known for the Wrought Iron Railway Axles that were produced between 1840 and production stopping around 1910. Remaining as the only surviving water-powered heavy wrought iron forge, Worley Top Forge was a working site until 1924 due to downturn in steel production.
Following the final abandonment of the site in 1929, various bodies have been involved in securing the site which now forms the heart of an Industrial Museum. It was taken over by the South Yorkshire Industrial History Society in 1953 who have maintained the site to this day.
