The Silhouette Tour is a tour like no other. Explore the I&M Canal through its people. Working with artist and iron worker Marsha Lega, we've developed rustic, life-size, Cor-Ten steel silhouettes based on real historical figures. Placed throughout our National Heritage Area, these silhouettes tell their stories and the lasting impact they have had. Relive the fateful turning point in our history that led to a new era of transportation and the growth of our region by taking a trip on The Volunteer, our Canal Boat. This vessel is not only a replica of those from the 1840s. It also runs on the same energy source: mule power!
Your journey includes: a “Mule Tending 101” class in which you’ll meet Moe the Mule, interact with crew of period dressed guides, hear tales of the canal’s heyday and enjoy an approximately 75 minute leisurely ride on a replica packet boat along the Illinois and Michigan Canal.
The boat will depart and return to the Lock 14 Parking Lot.
Since 1986, national park visitors and cross-country adventurers have used the Passport To Your National Parks® to collect ink stamps throughout their explorations. Take your Passport to any national park visitor center or park store to get your free ink stamp with the date and location of your visit.
