National Indigenous Peoples Day Celebrations

2019 is the International Year of Indigenous Languages. The United Nations created this observance for 2019 to raise awareness of the consequences of the endangerment of Indigenous languages across the world, with an aim to establish a link between language, development, peace, and reconciliation.

At the Exploration Place, we are pleased to host free National Indigenous Peoples Day activities in our atrium that blend Indigenous languages with computational thinking skills and coding.

Join us between 10am and 3pm in our atrium to make a binary beaded bracelet or keychain that codes a word from a local Indigenous language with our staff, and make rubbings of Indigenous symbols with staff from Two Rivers Gallery.

We are also pleased to offer rides on the Little Prince Steam Engine from 12-4pm today at no charge!

In 2017 we signed a Memoradum of Understanding with the Lheidli T'enneh Nation and we are thankful for this partnership as we are also located on the traditional and unceded territory of the Lheidli T'enneh Nation.

We would also like to thank Two Rivers Gallery and School District 57's Aboriginal Education Department for partnering with us on this event.

This event was made possible by support from the Government of Canada through Celebrate Canada! funding.
