Home Economics for Kids (adults also welcome)
About this Event
Classes will be Fridays from 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM at our home/business Dirty Man Soap & Farmstead in Chehalis, WA. Indoor classes will be held in our soap shop which is also our canning kitchen (detached garage converted to business space - our home is next door). Outdoor classes will be in our garden/greenhouse.
I'm planning this primarily for ages 10+ (must be old/independent enough to follow directions safely for knife handling, etc. and to be dropped off, if you choose) but age is flexible - please ask.
Please note, you may attend with your child but please clear it with me first if you're only planning to purchase 1 ticket and observe rather than participate. I have limited space so, much as I would love to have everyone here, we will run out of room in a hurry.
**Assume you need to purchase a ticket for each person who will physically be here unless you have permission from me otherwise.**
I am a homeschooling mom as well as a small business owner so my 4 children will be participating in these classes too. They are 7, 9, 11, and 13.
I have been cooking/baking since I was a small girl, attended a year of Culinary Arts training in high school, and worked as head cook at a retreat center preparing meals for 100+ people daily at age 18. I've been growing, preparing, and preserving all kinds of food with my husband and kiddos each year for the last 15 years and I'm super excited to pass on whatever I can of what I know!
March 3rd: Pumpkin Pie - making pie crust and filling from scratch. While the pie is baking, we will work on some basic knife safety and cutting skills.
March 10th: Starting plants from seed (outside/greenhouse: dress warm and be prepared to get dirty)
March 17th: Basic Bread dough and Soup 101 (prepping veggies, sautéing, deglazing pan, thickening with roux, etc.).
March 24th: How to start new plants from existing plants: We'll talk about some of the common methods and I'll demonstrate (with active participation from everyone) layering, digging a plant and dividing it, taking cuttings and rooting them, and digging runners from a parent plant. Come dressed warmly and ready to get dirty! (if the weather is terrible this day, we'll come up with an plan b indoors or at least in the greenhouse).
March 31st: Making butter in mason jars (get ready to shake!), soft cheese, and hummus if we have time.
April 7th: Making and canning jam
April 14th: Making bagels from scratch. We'll probably do some outdoor garden activity while waiting for bagels to rise/bake so dress accordingly.
April 21st: Fermented vegetables - Sauerkraut and pickled carrots
April 28th: Biscuits & Gravy from scratch plus a little gardening, weather dependent
May 5th: How to plan a garden: what plants grow well together, how much space do plants needs, should you plant seeds or started plants, etc. We'll try to cover a lot of typical questions and each child will get to plan out a small garden on paper. Come prepared for outside weather as we'll spend a bit of time looking at perennial plant examples and checking on our plant starts in the greenhouse, etc.
May 12th: Preparing a "lasagna" garden bed. We'll have supplies gathered and we'll prepare a small garden plot using the lasagna layering method. If we have time, we'll also plant as much of it as we can.
May 19th: Planting the Lasagna garden bed - let's plant our garden bed together! We'll use a variety of seeds and plants so everyone gets a bit of experience with both.
Details for further classes/specific dates will be added later but I plan to cover a wide range of material spanning cooking, baking, canning, fermenting, growing plants, gardening, harvesting - a little of everything depending on the season/what we're currently working on ourselves. Please ask if there are specific things you'd like to see covered!
Most of the time, you won't be taking anything home from class other than recipes, just sampling your efforts in class wherever possible ('cause you can't cook and bake without tasting the results!). There will be some exceptions like if you help start plants, you'll be able to take some home later in the season when they're ready to plant out, etc.
