What is "plirding"? Inspired by “plogging” (picking up trash while jogging), “plirding” is picking up trash while birding.

About this Event

Plirding with a Purpose: Monthly Birding & Stewardship Walks

Hosted by DeKalb County RPCA Park Naturalist & Talkin’ Birds Ambassador Tasha Messer

Join us for Plirding—a simple yet meaningful way to combine birding with environmental stewardship. Inspired by Ray Brown’s Talkin’ Birds initiative, these monthly walks invite us to care for birds and their habitats by picking up litter while enjoying time outdoors.

As DeKalb County RPCA’s Park Naturalist, and now a proud Talkin’ Birds Ambassador, I lead these walks to connect people with local wildlife and encourage everyday conservation. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned birder, you're welcome to be part of this ongoing effort.

WHEN & WHERE:

JUNE 2025 - DECEMBER 2025

3rd Sunday Michelle Obama Trail (MOT-Left Side)

-2901 Clifton Springs Rd, Decatur, GA 30034

TIME:

*Ongoing through December 2025

-Times subject to seasonal changes

9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

WHAT WE'LL DO:

Each walk will focus on observing birdlife while removing litter—especially the kinds that harm wildlife most:

  • Fishing line – Often invisible and a serious entanglement risk.
  • Lead tackle/bullets – Toxic to birds both directly and indirectly.
  • Balloons – Mistaken as food by birds and turtles.
  • Plastic – Found in nests and ecosystems around the world.

WHAT TO BRING:

Binoculars (if you already own a pair), gloves, a trash bag or small container, water, and your love for nature. Extra supplies and bird identification assistance will be available onsite.

Let’s bird with purpose, give back to the parks we enjoy, and spread the joy of plirding—together.
