Get ready to flex your creative muscles and design the most resilient landscapes in our competition and workshop!

About this Event

Join the Resilient Landscapes Coalition, Safer West County, and the Occidental Community Council for a workshop on Gardening in the Defensible Space Zone. Following this workshop, attendees are encouraged to submit a submission for the Occidental Community Center landscape design competition.

Learn how to create and maintain a fire-wise, sustainable garden that supports biodiversity while meeting County code requirements. We can help you with plant selection, placement, and maintenance, to preserve and even enhance wildlife habitat, helping to keep properties and neighborhoods fire-wise and sustainable.

This workshop will allow plenty of time for questions, discussion, and:

• Recommendations for fire-wise landscaping in the 0-5’, 5-30’, and 30-100’ defensible space zones, with specific plant and design suggestions.

• Practical ways to reconcile the sometimes conflicting guidelines, to achieve a beautiful,

biodiverse, energy-saving and water- and fire-wise landscape.

• A practical understanding of what it means to be sustainable in an ever-changing California Climate

•Tips on how and when to engage in pruning, irrigation, mulching, composting and other maintenance techniques for fire resiliency.

• Practical ways to achieve a beautiful, biodiverse, energy-saving and fire-wise landscape.• Learn about Safer West County’s defensible space rebate program–reimbursements for up to $1,000 spent on defensible space projects!

Attend this workshop to learn what we are looking for in a resilient, firewise landscape design for the Occidental Community Center! All are welcome to participate in this event. More details about the design competition to follow at the workshop.*Lunch is provided and registration is required!
