Drop in at the Fuller Craft Museum for a creative writing workshop over four sessions instructed by Quentin Lucas!


Below is the syllabus for “Unpacking the Written Story”:


July 12: Story Structure

  • Explore Pixar’s “The Story Spine” which is used to outline many of their movies
  • Understanding the 3-Act Structure and its key elements like the Inciting Incident, the Midpoint, and the Climax
  • Kishotenketsu: The four act storytelling structure used in Anime, Manga, et cetera
  • Writing Prompts and Class discussion on how to adjust story structure to best serve your story

July 19: Story Deconstruction

  • Exploring the various parts of a story
  • Reading flash fiction and nonfiction to explore how these storytelling elements work with each other

July 26: Mid Series Break


August 2: Dialogue

  • Exploring the Dynamics of Dialogue
  • Why do characters speak the way they do? When do your characters speak in way they usually wouldn’t?
  • Exploring the 5 narrative voices: Chatty, lyricaly, repetitive, nonlinear (or stream of consciousness), and your own organic voice

August 9: Story Formats

  • Exploring Different Story Formats
  • Finding Out Which Story Format can work best for your story

Note: Each class will include writing prompts, tips, videos, and written materials that students can keep and use to assist them in their storytelling work in perpetuity.
