Raptors on the Move: Bird Watch
About this Event
Join us for a "Big Sit" style event as we monitor the skies for raptors on the move! Unlike typical birding, where you may spend time walking or moving to different locations, a Big Sit requires you to stay within a designated area. Each year during fall migration, hawks and other migratory raptors will cruise south across the Susquehanna River hills as they head towards their wintering locations, making it an optimal time to take a Big Sit and watch the skies!
What to Expect: Spend the full time or even just an hour or two as we watch the skies for hawks, eagles, and other raptors. There may also be waterfowl and other migratory birds. The group will have an opportunity to sharpen observation and identification skills with assistance from resident bird nerd, Sarah Gotwols. There is a port-a-john available on site. This event is recommended for ages 10 and up (participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult).
What to Bring: Please bring binoculars if you have them, drinking water, and any snacks or personal supplies you may want. Dress for the weather and wear appropriate shoes. A portable chair or seat may be useful. If you do not have binoculars or a field guide, some will be available to use at the event.
Event Leader: Sarah Gotwols is a Lancaster County native with a passion for birding and enthusiasm for educating the public on the importance of conservation and protection of our wild spaces. Sarah has spent countless hours on both land and water, observing and learning about bird behavior and local habitat, identifying avian species across local preserves, waterways, and beyond. Sarah is the Volunteer Coordinator at Lancaster Conservancy.
Animal Policy: Service animals active or in training are welcome. Please leave all pets at home.
Refund Policy: If you are unable to attend this event after purchasing a ticket, refund requests must be made at least 48 hours before the event.
Cancellation Policy: This event will be held rain or shine, with cancellation for severe weather made at the time of the event. If the Conservancy reschedules the event, attendees will be emailed, and tickets will be automatically moved to the new date. If the Conservancy cancels the event, attendees will be notified via email and refunded.
