About this Event

SMUG ROBERTS STORYTELLING WORKSHOPWe all tell stories. At the bus stop, over a brew, to fill a silence. These workshops are about doing it on purpose and doing it well. They’re one-day sessions for anyone, whether you’re new to storytelling or just want to sharpen your tools. We look at what makes a good story, why people listen, and how to find your voice without putting one on. It’s practical, thoughtful, a bit daft at times, but always useful. Based on years of telling stories myself, in places where people didn’t always expect them.PRESS QUOTES:“A master storyteller” (Radio Times)“A comedy maestro” (City Life)“A masterclass in comedy” (John Fleming)CREDITS INCLUDE:Telly: Coronation Street/Mrs Browns Boys/Phoenix NightsFilm: Looking for Eric/ 24 Hour Party People/Mr Doom-Behind The 8 Ball.Radio: The In Crowd (Radio 4) Smug’s Set and a Song (Radio 4)The Smug Roberts Show (BBC Radio Manchester)MORE SMUG ROBERTS QUOTES:"There is a world of difference between seeing a comedian and watching a comedy act. A comedian tells funny stories armed with nothing more than a microphone and his or hers quick wits. A comedy act however expands the parameters of a stand up routine blurring the distinction between comedy and theatre, entertainment and performance. Smug Roberts is in a long line of performers from Manchester who use dramatic techniques to broaden the scope of their acts, like Steve Coogan, Johnny Vegas and Caroline Aherne, he is as much an actor as he is a comedian” (Edinburgh Evening News)"The pace, emphasis and rhythm of his delivery is impeccable. A rock-solid act guaranteed to entertain" Anyone who has seen the BAFTA award winning shows Buried (Ch4) Mrs Browns Boys(BBC1) Phoenix Nights(Ch4) and the Ken Loach film 'Looking For Eric’ will instantly recognise Smug" (City Life)"Smug is 57 and had a pretty-much full audience at the Free Sisters pub tonightin which, I think, I was the only person over 30. It was an audience of 20 somethings(at least one was 19) and they laughed virtually non-stop for 55 minutes because this isa masterclass in comedy. Autobiographical, fanciful (at home, his dog speaks to him),seemingly effortless comedy within straight, traditional stand-up, including vocaland physical bits of 'business'. Smug Roberts should be a national institution. He is a brilliantly assured comic now incapable, I would suspect, of ever puttinga foot wrong with any audience. His show is called Just Me In a Pub doing Stand-Up.That is more than enough for me. Wonderful" (John Fleming)“Best known as a stand-up comedian, Smug offers laid-back, sharply drawn takes on everyday life that feel more like a chat in the pub than a performance. He talks about himself, where he’s from, what he’s seen, and the odd conclusions he’s come to along the way. It’s comedy that ambles along, then catches you off guard with something delightfully silly or unexpectedly sharp” (MEN)
