An Incredible Journey: Birding Along the Migratory Pathway
About this Event
Each year, a variety of bird species travels thousands of miles between their summer homes in the US and Canada to their winter breeding grounds in Central and South America. The Susquehanna River valley is an important location along the migratory pathway, providing crucial habitat where birds can rest and refuel on their journey. Songbirds, shorebirds, waterfowl and raptors can be seen and heard easily in the fall months on most of the trails and preserves. Your event leader, Sarah Gotwols, will help you explore the world of Pennsylvania's migratory visitors, and sharpen your observation skills as a birder.
What to Expect: The Lloyd Clark Universal Access Trail will be used for the entirety of this event, making this event friendly to those with varying mobility needs. Expect some stillness as we observe the wide-open sky to see avian species on the move. There is a port-a-john available on site. This event is for ages 10 and up (participants must be accompanied by an adult if younger than 18).
What to Bring: Please bring binoculars if you have them, drinking water, and any snacks or personal supplies you may want. Dress for the weather and wear appropriate shoes. A portable chair or seat may be useful. If you do not have binoculars or a field guide, some will be available to use during the event.
Event Leader: Sarah Gotwols is a Lancaster County native with a passion for birding, and enthusiasm for educating the public on the importance of conservation and protection of our wild spaces. Sarah has spent countless hours on both land and water, observing and learning about bird behavior and local habitat, identifying avian species across local preserves, waterways, and beyond.
Animal Policy: Service animals active or in training are welcome. Please leave all pets at home.
