Join us for a hands-on workshop addressing key challenges faced by producers and exploring innovative solutions for “growing forward.” Learn about the many amazing conservation and remediation practices that have been put in place at S3 Legacy Ranch that enhance production while protecting the environment.


The day will feature a farm tour and expert-led discussions on essential topics, including:

  • Site remediation for contaminants such as oil
  • Water availability and access
  • Land conservation and easements
  • Erosion prevention and soil health
  • Cover cropping for sustainable farming
  • Funding opportunities in agriculture

Hosted at S3 Legacy Ranch, a family farm in Caldwell County.

INSTRUCTORS:

Dr. Ken Mix is the Program director of The Small Producer Initiative at Texas State University and currently teaches entomology, soil health, and crop production, with active research on small producer needs, soil, and water resources. He is a former vegetable producer and currently runs SKM Homestead, a small livestock and mixed produce 50-acre farm in Fentress, Texas.

American Farmland Trust (AFT) leads the conservation agriculture movement with a mission to save America’s farms and ranches. AFT protects agricultural land, promotes sustainable practices, and supports farm families. Through research, advocacy, and on-the-ground work, AFT connects the land, the farmers, and the food we all depend on. Their well-known No Farms No Food® message reminds us that protecting farmland is essential to securing our food future.

Deydra Steans is a a fifth-generation Texas farmer and rancher at S3 Legacy Ranch, a family farm in Caldwell County. As the owner of Black Gold Resourcing LLC, Deydra is dedicated to providing education and resources to marginalized agricultural producers nationwide. She is also the founder of multiple sustainable agriculture initiatives and one of the first Black women in Texas to establish a B Corporation.


This event is made possible through funding from USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and is held in collaboration with the American Farmland Trust.
