Intro to Home Funerals and Death Shrouds

An introduction to personal, gentle & loving care of the dead. Learn how to prepare, shroud and anoint them, with an intro to home funerals.

About this Event

Lyn Baylis learnt how to care for the dead and how to use fabric shrouds around 65 years ago and her life's work has been supporting the bereaved and sharing her knowledge. We're super excited to have her with us, teaching us how to care for our dead and how to manage a home funeral on a budget.

We'll be learning some Pagan-centred anointing and shrouding traditions, with sacred herbs and oils. Lyn is a Pagan priestess who helps run and teach the Pagan Seminary's course in becoming a Pagan chaplain, helping more people to receive last rites in hospitals, hospices, homes and prisons.

During this gentle two hour event, we'll chat about home funerals and caring for the dead at home. Lyn will demonstrate her shrouding process, and talk a bit about the oils and herbs she uses to anoint the dead.

Our venue is Puck, (newly- painted yellow on the outside!): PUCK, Chatham Place Brighton BN1 3T.

Puck sell delicious hot drinks and ridiculously good snacks and there's a record shop upstairs.

The room we'll be in isn't super accessible for wheelchairs, but there are no stairs to navigate as we're on the ground floor.

Tickets are a priced on a ‘Pay What You Can’ basis with no need to prove or explain your financial situation, we want our workshops to be as accessible to you as possible.

£2.50- £12.50

There are donation-based tickets where you can opt to get a ticket for zero money if £2.50 is a financial barrier. There's an additional pay-it-forward ticket option of £22 available too.

We know that this subject matter can feel hard to navigate, and that in-person events can feel hard. we're on the ground floor. Please do contact us for more info around accessibility, the subject matter, or any other concerns that you might have. We really want you to feel as comfortable as you can and there's no pressure to join in with discussion or conversation if you don't want to.

A little bit about grief, because we know it might show up:

The term “grief” or “grieving” is often applied to the experience of loss through the death of someone we knew, and we recognise that this is a very simple definition.

Grief comes in many forms. You are very welcome to attend, whatever form of grief you are experiencing, be this bereavement, anticipatory grief, ancestral grief, or other forms of loss. You are welcome to talk about your grief if you want, though we ask that you respect the privacy and boundaries of others in the group by not asking them questions about their grief, or discussing other people's grief outside the group.

Please note, we are not qualified therapists, and the event is not a therapy group.
