ABOUT THE BOOK
To escape the predations of the Nazis, a rare two-hundred year old Torah is quietly smuggled out of a doomed North African Jewish community in the dead of the night, and put aboard a freighter. Eventually, it makes its way across the Atlantic. Long after the war has ended, it resides in obscurity in a small, rundown Sephardic temple in Hollywood. The peace is shattered, however, when suddenly someone tries to break in and abscond with it.
Amos Parisman, a local agnostic, aging gumshoe is hired to thwart the would-be burglar. This touches off a madcap plunge into the world of international art and antiquities, and the ruthless people who will stop at nothing--not even M**der to own them. The Gonif parses the difference between true wisdom and the coarse material world we live in.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Andy Weinberger was born in New York and grew up in Pasadena and Hollywood. He studied Chinese history in college and wanted to be a poet, but his parents talked him out of it. He and his wife Lilla started Readers' Books in Sonoma in 1991, which he still runs. He has been writing since he was twelve and finally achieved publishing success at age 72, which says something about persistence. The Gonif is the fifth book and the latest in the Amos Parisman mystery series.
