About this Event

Lunch & Learn: From Smart Tree Inventories to Smart Tree Management

Tree inventories have evolved—from pen-and-paper surveys to advanced systems powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). These technologies now enable the creation of 4D Digital Tree Twins, updated regularly instead of once a decade, offering a far more dynamic and actionable view of the urban forest.

As the climate changes faster than our trees can adapt, cities need modern tools to keep pace. This Lunch & Learn, hosted by Davey Resource Group (DRG) and greehill, explores how to transition from traditional urban forestry practices to a Smart Tree Management (STM) program—one that leverages AI-driven inventories and continuous monitoring to support safer, healthier, and more cost-effective urban forests.

We’ll demonstrate how STM enhances risk reduction, improves maintenance cost efficiency, and extends the lifespan of tree assets—all while providing clear, data-driven insights to guide your urban forest strategy.

Who should attend:

  • Municipal Arborists & City Foresters
  • Urban Forestry & Green Infrastructure Staff
  • Parks and Public Works Officials
  • Government Leaders & Planners

Smart Tree Inventories & American Fork, UT Demo
Host: Josh Behounek

Info: Tree inventories have come a long way—from manual, pen-and-paper surveys to modern systems powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). By integrating these technologies, we can shift from static, once-a-decade assessments to dynamic, 4D digital twins updated on a biennial cycle.

This presentation will introduce the concept of Smart Tree Inventories, highlighting current methodologies, key outcomes, and a vision for the future. We’ll feature a live demo of data from the City of American Fork, UT, which launched a pioneering Smart Tree Inventory in summer 2024, establishing itself as a regional leader.

Attendees will gain insight into the data-rich outputs of this approach, including visualizations of road and utility clearance zones, as well as how remote sensing and field inspections were used to flag and assess outlier trees.

Smart Tree Management

Info: Make the Right Decision, on the Right Tree, at the Right Time. As the climate shifts faster than our urban trees can adapt, the need for proactive, data-driven management has never been more urgent. Traditional tree care approaches must evolve to meet the demands of modern cities and limited budgets.

Building on the foundation of Smart Tree Inventories, this presentation explores how cutting-edge tools and technologies enable practitioners to make informed decisions that drive key performance indicators. We'll demonstrate how data collected during inventories can be translated into targeted management strategies that reduce risk, improve maintenance cost efficiency, and extend the lifespan of urban tree assets.

Attendees will gain insight into how Smart Tree Management supports more effective operations, greater accountability, and a healthier, longer-lasting urban forest.
