Welcome to the Introduction to Land Navigation event! Join us at Goodwill learning center on Wed, July 16th at 8:00 AM to learn essential skills for navigating the great outdoors. Doors will open at 7:45 and class will begin on time.

Whether you're a beginner or looking to brush up on your knowledge, this event is perfect for all levels. Don't miss out on this opportunity to explore the world around you with confidence. See you there!


What to Expect:

This hands-on seven-hour class on the use of map and compass for land navigation will teach you the basics you need to get you on your way, or be a refresher for those whose skills have grown rusty.

We’ll use a combination of classroom (3 hours) and followed by outdoor instruction at Sandia Mountain to help you practice this skill that is critical for hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts. *We will hike roughly 2 miles.

Participants must be prepared and dressedappropriately for prevailing weather conditions and be able to hike at least two miles over rugged terrain.

We will provide:

  • topographical map of Sandia Mountaion
  • basic compass
  • pen
  • notebook
  • snacks
  • sunscreen

What to bring:

  • at least 2 liters of water
  • sack lunch
  • snacks
  • basic compass if you have one
  • notebook pen

What to wear:

  • Ball cap, sun hat or boonie hat
  • Synthetic underwear
  • Long or short sleeve synthetic or blend shirt
  • Softshell long pants (recommend pants that are DWR and or dry quickly.
  • cotton garments, please. No shorts, skirts or kilts)
  • Wool or synthetic hiking socks
  • Hiking boots or trail runners. (Must be broken in and have good tread)
  • Summer neck gaiter, or cool cloth, or shemagh (optional)
  • Seat pad, towel or yoga mat for sitting/kneeling on the ground (optional)
  • Sunscreen and lip sunscreen (SPF-15 or higher)
  • Any other health & comfort items you deem appropriate
  • Backpack to hold your gear
