About this Event
Deputy Chief Steven Shaffer of the Boston Fire Department (MA), who was the initial Incident Commander of a nine-alarm row house fire that resulted in the tragic line-of-duty deaths of two firefighters at 298 Beacon Street, will discuss the incident and the critical lessons learned.
Deputy Chief Shaffer brings 34 years of fire service experience, including time in Brookline and Boston, MA. As Boston’s Chief of Training (2018–2020), he led initiatives such as:
- ASHE response training
- Officer Development training
- Fire Dynamics training
- Firefighter Safety & Survival training
He serves on the instructor cadre for UL’s FSRI “Fire Dynamics Bootcamp,” and has participated in grant-supported research on risk-benefit frameworks for fireground exposures. Additionally, he is involved in the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s IC-to-IC Peer Support Group, offering support to commanders impacted by line-of-duty deaths.
