π Lecture: βBig Bangs & Old Gods: Where Science Meets Mythβ
π€ Speaker: Astrophysicist, Dr. Moiya McTier
Scientists are pretty sure we know how the universe formed, and we think we know how it will end, but different cultures had lots of ideas about what cooked our cosmic soup. In this talk, Dr. Moiya will compare the science of cosmology (no brushes or scissors involved, promise!) to folklore about creation and destruction from around the world. How much longer will the universe be around and which mythology got closest to the truth? Come to find out!
Dr. Moiya McTier is an astrophysicist, folklorist, and science communicator based in NYC. Since graduating from Harvard and Columbia, Dr. Moiya has given hundreds of talks on science around the world, consulted with Disney and others on very cool projects, and published her debut book THE MILKY WAY: An Autobiography of Our Galaxy, which was named a best book of 2022 by Publishers Weekly. Hear Dr. Moiya make the universe seem cool and cozy on her podcast Pale Blue Pod and check out her other work on her website moiyamctier.com
Donβt miss this opportunity to expand your understanding of the cosmos and the rich tapestry of stories that different cultures have woven around it!
