Set in River City, where everything revolves around the elegantly violent sport of warcheck, this coming-of-age story follows Terra Laclem, daughter of a warcheck legend, as she confronts family betrayal, inherited loyalties, and a mysterious bond with her town’s beloved turtle mascots. With lush prose and deep emotional insight, Barnidge explores legacy, belonging, and the quiet rebellions that lead us home.

About the Author:
Sandra K. Barnidge is a Northport, Alabama–based writer with a background in journalism and creative writing. Her work has appeared in Reckon Review, Atlas Obscura, Barren, The Fiddlehead, Nimrod, and more. Originally from Wisconsin, she now writes and gardens in the South. The Diamondbacks is her debut novel.
