Safety briefing

Every event at the range will open with the following reminders.

Environmental safety: Heat exhaustion and hypothermia are common concerns, but they are specific to the environment. Everyone should be aware of the weather and health concerns that accompany it. Don’t waste a range trip by showing up dehydrated and improperly dressed for the event.

Firearm safety rules: Review the 4 rules of firearms safety before coming. We will do this as a group as well.

  • Range commands and jargon: Make sure everyone understands the terms we will be using.
  • “Range is cold” means all firearms should be unloaded with their chambers visible. Pistols should have the slide locked back and carbines should have the bolt to the rear.
  • “Range is hot” or “load and make ready” means everyone is on the firing line or behind it so firearms can (and will) be loaded with live rounds; NO ONE should be in front of the firing line.
  • Determine an appropriate command for students to actually commence the drill they are supposed to be doing.
  • “Cease fire” can be called by anyone, at which point everyone should stop shooting and unload their weapons so the range is cold. This should only be used if someone is in imminent danger or is injured.
  • Firing line etiquette: Make sure everyone understands the 180 rule of safety. Shooting and other firearm handling should only occur when ON the firing line.

Medical/emergency procedures: Discuss what medical equipment each person will be bringing. As stated previously, every person should have their own IFAK. Ideally, there should be at least one larger, more exhaustive medical kit available. Make sure everyone knows who will be bringing it, what it looks like, where it will be stored, etc for the live fire component.
