The pressure is on! Spectators (and laughter) are encouraged at this free event. Come to the library to be entertained by an unserious tournament designed to impress and amuse. ? Register to be a contestant here: https://forms.gle/T4rerpJ11C9kUbZ37 ? WHAT IS THE UM TOURNAMENT? ? The Um Tournament is a bracketed improv public speaking competition that challenges contestants to speak clearly and coherently on a random, silly prompt without using filler words (like "um" or "uh") or pauses exceeding 2 seconds. Contestants will be observed by a panel of judges, who will score their performance. As contestants progress through the bracket, their time to speak will increase, as will the pressure to be funny and entertain an audience and judges, who all came expecting to laugh on a Saturday morning. TL;DR: An unserious competition where you talk good and win laughs from strangers. ? WHAT ARE THE RULES? ? Contestants must: • stay on topic for the full duration of their allotted time • refrain from the use of filler words like "um" or "uh" • refrain from pauses exceeding 2 seconds • speak clearly and steadily • keep their language clean and family-friendly (this is a library event, after all) • try to be at least a little bit funny Contestants are asked to arrive at the Moberly Library (located at 111 N 4th St, Moberly, MO 65270) between 9:15 & 9:30 am on Saturday, July 11. At this time, they will receive an overview of the rules and a demonstration by the tournament's organizing librarian. The library does not guarantee the quality of this demonstration, but it will certainly be educational for everyone involved. Doors will open to the public for seating at 9:45 am, and the tournament will start at 10:00 am. Contestants who fail to arrive before 9:30 am will be scratched from the bracket. ?
