It started small. A fisherman pulling in nets heavier than they should be. Strange lights glimpsed far below the surface, gone by the time anyone got close enough to look properly. The old-timers at the harbour have started telling stories again — the kind about what actually lives down where the light doesn't reach. Nobody can explain it yet, but everyone agrees on one thing: something down there is waking up, and on 5 September, it's coming ashore. Side Quest Socials rolls into the Fish Hoek Civic Centre for a full day of hands-on making, curious creatures, and community adventure — come see what the depths have sent up.

🎒 The Market

Our vendor market is back. And when we say curated, we mean it — not the buzzword every market slaps on their page, but genuine, hands-on care in who gets a table. We look for a wide spread of unique makers with real skill, and we watch overlap closely so you're not seeing the same three products at five different tables. Fan art, handmade collectibles, prints, oddities, hoard-worthy finds — every table has a geeky thread running through it, something for every kind of fan, all of it made by real hands. If it came from Temu, it stays home — no mass-produced stock, no AI slop.

And because a day of questing runs on fuel, the Rations are showing up too — think loaded fries, gourmet bao buns, and something to keep the coffee drinkers happy. Full vendor line-up drops closer to the day.

The Exhibition

Our featured artist is Natasha Saaiman (@artbynatasha_s on Instagram) — a digital illustrator whose work lives in gothic folklore and creature horror. Towering nightmares rising out of swamp water. Figures caught mid-transformation between human and something else entirely. Blood, dread, and beauty sitting a little too close together. Her ability to make the monstrous feel both ancient and intimate made her an easy pick to anchor an event steeped in Lovecraftian dread — we've admired her work for a while, and we're genuinely thrilled to have her with us.

She'll be live on the day with a gamified sketch session — bring your prompts, watch the piece take shape on our Live Sketch Window — then stick around for her artist talk.

🎲 Roll & Reveal (Workshop)

By the end of the session, you won't just have a drawing — you'll have become part of something only 53 other people can say they're part of too. One deck. One card each. Yours included.

Roll a die five times, and the dice decide everything: your creature's body shape, its texture, how many limbs it has, a special ability, and its scale — small enough for a jewellery box, or big enough to dwarf a lighthouse. You don't choose your monster. You just have to make it real, in acrylic paint marker & colour pencils on A5 black cardstock.

Part dice game, part life drawing prompt — the same constraint-based exercise illustrators already run for themselves online, for fun, alone, for likes. Except this time it's tactile, timed, social, and what you make becomes something bigger than a post: a specific card in a real, shared deck.

Skill level: Intermediate/Advanced. Ages: 16+.

All 54 drawings from the day's three sessions become one professionally printed deck of standard poker-size playing cards — each of the 54 creatures keeps its own real rank and suit, worked right into the illustration, with a uniform branded back and its own branded box. Every participant, across all three sessions, receives an identical copy of the finished deck, plus their own original piece back — both delivered to a Pudo locker near you.

18 seats per session. R450, all-inclusive — your General Admission, your printed deck, and your locker delivery are all covered in that one price. Tickets online only, no door sales, each session bookable right up until it starts.

📜 Your First Quest (New!) 
Pick up a quest card at check-in. Every card sends you off on something a little different — the deck's shuffled, so no two visits play out the same. Come back in December, and you'll draw something new.

📌 The Community Board (New!) 
This one's fresh for Fish Hoek. Got a rare item you're hunting for? Need a fourth for your D&D table? Looking for someone who also collects vintage keychains, or wants to swap comics, or just needs a painting buddy for next month? Pin it to the board. It's part request wall, part rumour mill — a low-pressure way to find your people without having to walk up and start the conversation yourself. At the end of the day, we'll photograph the board and share the posts on our socials — so if you spot a message meant for you, keep an eye out.

🃏 The Trading Corner (New!)
A dedicated space for Magic, Pokémon, and comics traders to meet and deal. Ahead of the event, we'll share a sign-up sheet where you can list what you've got and what you're hunting for — so when you show up, you already know who to find. Bring your binder, bring your deck box, come ready to make a trade.

🕹️ The Social Zone 
Out in the courtyard, we've got space set aside for hanging out between quests. Bring your own cards, your own board game, your own deck — pull up a seat and play. No booking, no pressure, just a spot to sit and game with whoever else wanders over.
