每朔望日 Every New & Full Moon days

布薩日是精進修練的周期日，爲整個上座部佛教世界的居士與比丘遵奉。佛教的布薩雖原是承襲古印度傳統的一個習俗，但至今布薩的舉行仍可發揮僧團和合與清淨的功能。

在新月與滿月日，比丘們舉行兩周一次的懺悔並持誦波羅提木叉戒經。 在布薩日裏，居家者爲了益於禪修、也爲增長對佛法的承諾而持守八戒，或者在三寶前誦持在家五戒發露求懺悔（寬恕）。一般上，居家者在這些日子裏盡可能造訪寺院，對僧伽作特別供養，聽聞佛法，與衆法友共修禪定，直至入夜。周圍無寺院親近者，可以視全世界正在修行的佛教徒爲無形的支持，在這一日精進禪定。

說戒，依波羅提木叉的意思有不同的發展階段。佛陀成道後的前十二年，他以「善護其口言，自淨其志意，身莫作諸惡，此三業道淨，能得如是行，是大仙人道。」偈頌為比丘說波羅提木叉。而後，因有比丘犯不淨行，從此佛陀開始制定學處，不再說戒偈，而廣分別說。後來，佛陀於布薩時，發現眾中有不淨比丘，決定不再為弟子們說戒，此後由比丘們自行說戒。

During new and full moon days, or Uposatha Days, monks (bhikkhus) and nuns (bhikkhunis) would gather to listen to the recitation of the Patimokkha rules. As for the devotees, normally they would gather in the local monastery to observe the precepts more strictly and listen to and speak about Dhamma. The basic, minimum standard is the 5 Precepts for practicing lay Buddhists, however, on such Observance Days (or other special occasion) they may decide to train under the Eight Precepts, which brings them closer to how the monk or nun practices.
