Join Emilymae King-Ryden for an intensive, hands-on classroom workshop dedicated to the awakening Northwoods. 

This is a vital window to nourish and revive our bodies after the long winter using "ephemerals"—from the Greek ephēmeros, meaning “lasting a day.”

In-Classroom Experience

Skip the trudge and dive straight into the science and spirit of foraging. This lecture-style workshop uses physical specimens and a detailed PowerPoint to bring the forest to the library. We will learn to read Nature’s subtle cues—predicting when leaves will unfurl and understanding the rhythm of these elusive, majestic beings before they vanish for another year.

We will cover:

• Identification Lab: Examine live buds, tender greens, and early annual mushrooms to master field ID before you head into the woods.

• The Forager’s Ethics: Honorable harvesting, understanding land laws, and the "rules of the woods" for a fruitful season.

• Processing & Extraction: Practical techniques for processing, consuming, and extracting medicine from nature’s spring bounty.

• The Medicine of Light: How to use the first gifts of spring to reboot your system and celebrate the end of winter.

Specimens & Discussion:

We will explore the folklore, properties, and identification of:

• Flora & Shoots: Wild Leeks (Ramps), Fiddleheads, Japanese Knotweed, Asparagus, Wild Ginger, and Dandelion.

• Trees & Fungi: Sugar Maple sap, Spruce/Pine tips, Resin, Pheasant Back (Dryad’s Saddle), Morels, Chaga, Birch Polypore, Turkey Tail, and Reishi.

• Wild Herbs: Heal-all, Raspberry leaf, Lilac, and Sarsaparilla.

We will complete our session by gathering together to enjoy a tea infused with the very elements of the spring forest discussed in class.
