- **Event Description**: The University of St. Thomas Law Journal invites you to attend our Fall 2025 Symposium: The Constitutional Rights of Lawyers and Law Firms.About this EventRecent executive orders targeting law firms for the clients they represent, the partners they associate with, or the causes they pursue raise urgent constitutional questions. Such measures strike at the core of the First Amendment, threatening both expressive freedom and the independence of the legal profession. How should the Constitution protect professional autonomy against ideological restrictions? What happens when principles of expressive association collide with anti-discrimination law? How do legal ethics, the Sixth Amendment, and the historic role of lawyers as Alexis de Tocqueville’s "natural aristocracy" safeguard the rule of law itself?Joined by leading First Amendment scholars and nationally recognized figures in legal ethics, this symposium The Constitutional Rights of Lawyers and Law Firms, will explore each of these questions in depth.Location: University of St. Thomas School of Law, Minneapolis | Hybrid format (in-person and Zoom). An application will be made to the Minnesota State Board of Continuing Legal Education for 5.75 CLE hours.Agenda?: 08:00 AM - 08:30 AMBreakfast?: 08:30 AM - 09:00 AMIntroductory Remarks Host: Michael Hurd, Law Journal Editor-in-Chief?: 09:00 AM - 10:15 AMPanel 1Host: Professor William BaudeInfo: The First Amendment Rights of Lawyers and Law Firms to Choose their Clients, Cases, Causes, and Colleagues. ?: 10:30 AM - 12:00 PMPanel 2Host: Professor Richard PainterInfo: The Right to Counsel, Lawyers' Professional Independence, and the Practical Consequences of the Trump Executive Orders. ?: 12:30 PM - 01:00 PMLunch?: 12:45 PM - 01:45 PMJ. "description": "The University of St. Thomas Law Journal is the School of Law’s flagship law review. It seeks to embody the school’s unique mission by publishing excellent legal scholarship that promotes ethical actions, the integration of faith and reason and social justice. The law journal’s Latin subtitleFides et Iustitia, which translates into “faith and justice,” is a core foundation of the works it publishes and the symposia it hosts each year. The law journal is a symposium-based journal. It offers two to three symposia each year and asks presenters to write an article or essay based on the symposium topic, their own experiences, and the discussion they take part in at the symposium. This promotes meaningful exploration of a current legal issue, and allows substantial collaboration between law review, our faculty and outside contributors. Symposia also give the law school community a chance to reflect on issues closely connected with the mission and vision of the School of Law. The journal also accepts unsolicited notes, comments or articles."
