This year's program opens on the same morning Outdoor Retailer convenes at the Minneapolis Convention Center for its first-ever Minnesota show, placing Black Bike Week's work in front of a national outdoor industry audience. Minneapolis: Miracle and Mandate — Ride the Duality a ride co-hosted by Slow Roll MSP and Melanin In Motion in collaboration with Outdoor Retailer. Culture and policy made that. Deliberate, funded, sustained.Culture and policy also made the racial covenant, the redline, the highway routed straight through a Black neighborhood, and the homeownership gap that still ranks among the widest in the nation. Same decades. Same institutions. Often the same signatures.And in the middle of that pressure, one of the most influential small Black communities in America built itself anyway — producing civil rights leadership, labor organizing, music that changed the world, and a tradition of outdoor leadership that runs straight into this ride.We roll through both stories on the same wheels, because they aren't separate stories.
