- **Event Description**: Please join us at our Minneapolis Parks and Power campaign Kick-off happening on Thursday, December 17th from 5:30pm - 8:00pm at Hope Community. The Parks and Power campaign has grown out of 20 years of engagement at Hope Community supporting efforts by neighborhood leaders in Phillips to secure more investment and renovations at Peavy Park. After hosting the first ever Racial Justice forum for park commissioner candidates in 2013 we widened the scope of our work to organizing city-wide to confront institutional racism in the Park Board. Since then we have won several victories, including securing Racial Justice goals and measures in the Minneapolis Park Board’s Urban Agriculture Master Plan and an Equity Impact Analysis of the Met Council’s Legacy Funding for Regional Parks; and we are just getting started. 

On December 17th we are kicking off a new phase of this work and want you to be there from the beginning. Over the years we have built relationships with grassroots leaders from across the city working on issues connected to their local park - from fighting to keep their Rec Center opened, to pushing for culturally relevant programming, to using the park as an organizing space to preserve affordable housing. On the 17th we are hoping to make connections between these various efforts, sharing lessons learned, strategies and our common goals and visions to build a unified, city-wide support network. 

The city of Minneapolis is growing and changing like never before, we envision the Parks and Power campaign to be a tool for communities of color and working class families to shape those changes and ensure our needs our met, starting with the heartbeat of our neighborhoods - the Parks.
