- **Event Description**: An evening presentation of an original body of electro/orchestral work composed by trans composer Walken Schweigert, Bard of the Night, inspired by Silvia Federici’s seminal work Caliban and the Witch.

Featuring:
Alma Engebretson, Arlo Sombor, Carlisle Evans Peck,
and Movement by Shá Cage.

Artist Statement:

In her acclaimed and highly regarded work "Caliban and the Witch", Silvia Federici connects the witch hunts of medieval Europe to the origins of capitalism and the spread of neoliberalism around the globe. She offers a convincing theory that the domination of capitalist ideology would not have been possible without the subjugation and oppression of women and queer/trans people and bodies. As a trans person committed to creating culture outside of and that subverts capitalist culture, I want to create and share music that responds, expands, and reflects on Federici’s research.

This is a piece for people seeking social, racial and gender justice who want to go deeper into how connected these movements are. Despite the rise of the word “intersectional”, our communities remain divided in many ways. Capitalism, oppression by the state, and the non-profit industrial complex has taught us to think only about the niche group that is like us. The struggles for liberation of black, brown, indigenous, femme, trans and disabled people are often considered to be separate from each other, and often ignore people who hold multiple of these identities. In recent years, it is becoming more common for people to champion that our struggles are all connected. How, specifically though? Gaining a historical and visceral understanding of this from Federici’s work radically changed my understanding of how, and it is this that I want to share with my communities.
