Join us for an energetic and joyful evening of Contra Dance at Tapestry Folkdance Center a lively, social dance tradition that’s easy to learn and fun for all ages.

What Is Contra Dance?

Contra dancing is led by a caller who teaches the dance through a friendly introductory walk-through. Dancers learn the steps and formations by walking through them together, then dancing to the music as the caller continues to guide the group. The figures are similar to old-time square dancing but are usually danced in long-ways sets, with partners facing each other in lines down the hall.

Contra dances are upbeat, social, and wonderfully aerobic. While you do dance with a partner, you don’t need to come with one—partners change throughout the evening, and all dances are taught.

What Is Contra Dance Music?

Contra dance music comes from rich, traditional acoustic music traditions and often features fiddles and other lively instruments. Tapestry offers live music every Saturday night, with many talented local musicians and occasional guest bands from out of town. You may hear music inspired by New England, French Canadian, Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton, and modern compositions.
