This will be the final Circle of Song of 2025 (unless people want a Friendsgiving one on the 29th- we're open to the possibility), because we are taking all of December off, in order to use Saturday nights to do practice and arrangement for our upcoming album, "Mother Anarchy". featuring comrades from both my previous band, the Wooden Shoe Ramblers, and my present band, The Last Words. This album of translated European anarchist and socialist music, along with my solo project of Minnesota labor history inspired songs, are slated for release in 2026. So, here's how Circle of Song works! We sit around in a circle, taking turns leading songs. You don't have to lead if you don't want to. The rotation of the circle can be fairly informal- people skip leading frequently, and some people lead or suggest new songs well before their turn comes around again. Just be aware of who's speaking and leading; we want everyone to be able to lead if they want to, but it's also fine if you just want to do accompaniment! It's good form to run through the chord progression quickly so others can play along. More experienced players are asked to be patient with and help along less-experienced players. Less experienced players are asked to use good judgement about whether they're able to follow along with the song, or if it's beyond their skill level. We mostly do folk/roots and adjacent genres: folk, folk punk, Americana, bluegrass, Old Time, the blues, Dixieland jazz, Irish trad, klezmer, etc etc etc. Other genres are welcome, but our amplification is minimal. The crowd at Circle of Song tends to lean politically very hard to the anti-authoritarian left. Protest and rebel music is a norm here. The night often evolves naturally into conversation. Non-players are welcome. We permit alcohol and THC consumption on-site. Imbibe responsibly if you imbibe. If you cannot drive home safely, please ask us to help you with a rideshare or make the guest room ready for you.
