Come be loud about the right people.In 1895, Kittie Knox rode into the League of American Wheelmen's national meet in Asbury Park — a Black woman, in self-tailored cycling bloomers, holding a membership card the League had recently voted to deny people like her. She didn't argue. She just showed up, rode well, and made the color bar look exactly as small as it was.That's the tradition. When cycling forgets who it belongs to, Black women arrive and repair it — usually without being asked, usually without being paid, usually while being told to be patient.This ride is for them.It's led by women that found others and support from the bike community, and it moves the way our rides always do: welcoming, unbothered, fast enough to feel like something and slow enough that nobody rides alone. Twenty miles at 12 to 14, no-drop, with a marshal at the front and a sweep who is not going anywhere without you. Bring your friend who's been "meaning to get back on a bike" for three years. This is the night she does it.Afterward, we present the Kittie Knox Awards, honoring outstanding contribution to Black women and cycling — the ride leaders, mechanics, organizers, coaches, and quiet operators who have moved this thing forward without ever being handed a microphone.
