An account of the life of Cassius Clay (played by Smith) as he becomes the man we know as Muhammad Ali. Though Ali may at first appear out of step with the rest of Mann’s filmography, here he unlocks the second half of the twentieth century through Black identity, modern policing, Malcolm X, and the oppressive weight of the American government and FBI.
