Fiona Benson FRSL is the author of four poetry collections: Bright Travellers, Vertigo & Ghost, Ephemeron and, most recently, Midden Witch. All three of her first published collections were shortlisted for the T S Eliot prize, and her books have won the Forward Prize, the Seamus Heaney Prize, the Roehampton Poetry Prize and the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize. Her script Infamous Offspring written for the Belgian choreographer Wim Vandekeybus / Ultima Vez has been performed across Europe and in the US. She has also edited two books of Ukrainian war poetry in translation – We Were Here by Artur Dron (2024) and Dasein: In Defence of Presence by Yaryna Chornohuz (2025). She lives in mid-Devon with her husband and their two daughters. The evening’s prose will be provided by Hazel Prior and we are thrilled that she will be bringing her harp with her. It sounds beautiful in this setting. Hazel is a Celtic harpist and the author of five bestselling novels. Her books have uplifting wildlife and environmental themes and are published in over 20 different languages. Her second novel, Away with the Penguins, was a Richard & Judy Book Club and a BBC Radio 2 Book Club pick and a number one bestseller. It is a number one bestseller in ebook and in audiobook. Her most recent book: Gone with the Penguins is a No 1 bestseller. We will be announcing the winners of the Poetry competition and inviting them to read their work for us; joined by judges Annie Fisher and Graeme Ryan who will also perform some of their own poems. Graeme Ryan was born in St Anne’s on Sea and has taught English and Drama for many years in the South West. A prize-winning poet, his debut poetry collection, Valley of the Kings, was published in 2022. The Dreaming of Hinkley Point, a collaboration with Somerset artist Georgina King, came out in June 2025. He is a member of Taunton’s Fire River Poets and Bath Writers and Artists. Annie Fisher: Annie’s background is in primary education, initially as a teacher and later as a literacy consultant working across Somerset schools. Now retired, she writes poetry for both adults and children. She has had two pamphlets published by HappenStance Press: Infinite in all Perfections (2016) and The Deal (2020), and a recent one from Mariscat Press: Missing the Man Next Door (2025). In 2025 Annie was awarded second prize in Poetry Teignmouth's Graham Burchell Award for Southwest Poets. She is a member of Taunton’s Fire River Poets, and a regular contributor to the online poetry journal, The Friday Poem. It promises to be an enchanting evening.
