"The Famous and the Infamous"
On Friday evening, July 25, from 6:30 –7:30pm, features Al Capone, American gangster during the era of Prohibition, as portrayed by Doug Mishler.
Alphonse Gabriel Capone, sometimes known by the nickname "Scarface", was an American gangster and businessman who attained notoriety during the Prohibition era as the co-founder and boss of the Chicago Outfit from 1925 to 1931.Capone’s seven-year reign as a crime boss ended when he was imprisoned at the age of thirty-three.
Doug Mishler has been a Chautauquan since 1993 when he first portrayed P. T. Barnum. Mishler has made over eight hundred presentations of over thirty historical figures including Henry Ford, Jackson Pollock, and recently added Chuck Yeager, Gene Roddenberry, and Earl Warren. He is also the founder and Managing Artistic Director of Restless Artists’ Theatre in Reno and has taught American Cultural History for over twenty-three years.
Opening for this showcase event will feature Mark Twain as portrayed by McAvoy Layne, as Master of Ceremonies.
Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known by the pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, and essayist. Clemens was praised as the greatest humorist the United States has produced, with William Faulkner calling him "the father of American literature". Twain's novels include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, as well as Roughing It.
After thirty-five years of school lectures and performances across the globe, McAvoy Layne retired from performing as Mark Twain in 2023, however he continues to find reasons to dust off the white suit for a good cause and a good time.
Chautauqua ticket price for this event is $15 for 17 years and older. Youth 16 years and younger are free when accompanied by an adult. Tickets can be purchased at the event. Please arrive no earlier than 5:30pm.
Please bring your own seating. During all events, no pets are allowed - certified service animals only. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Guests are welcome to bring snacks and beverages, as no food or beverages will be sold at these events. All events are held outdoors.
