- **Event Name**: Super Sunday: Walking tour – Victorian Funerary Traditions
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sun, 29 Jun, 2025 at 12:00 pm – Sun, 29 Jun, 2025 at 01:30 pm
- **Event Description**: Learn about some of the funerary and mourning customs and quirks of the Victorians – plus see iconic examples of monuments of the era.About this EventThis tour is one of four tours being offered on Super Sunday! They are timed so that you can attend up to three tours in one day with a short break in between. On this day, you will be able to purchase Silent City Honey (made by our bees), Forest Home-branded coffee, Green Burial ("100% biodegradable") T-shirts and Forest Home books – and as an added bonus, the historic crematory will be open after each tour! This building is very rarely open to the public.About this tourThis popular tour explores the curious and elaborate funerary customs of the Victorian era, named for Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1837 to 1901.The Victorians had a fascination with death and the afterlife and put money aside and planned for “the good death” - the ideal death and dying experience, dictated by strict social conventions and an intricate set of rituals. You'll learn about undertakers, at-home funerals, mourning periods and attire, death photography, and the difference between graverobbers and body snatchers (one was a felony, the other a misdemeanor!).Plus, you’ll see memorials and markers that make Forest Home one of the finest examples of a Victorian garden cemetery in the Upper Midwest.Important informationAll tours will start in Victorian Gardens! This is different than our other public tours. See map below for where to park and meet. Note: There are multiple events happening in the same general area that day but we will have volunteers onsite to help guide you.The Lincoln Avenue entrance is the only entrance open on Sundays.Because we have multiple tours this day and a different meeting location, please plan to arrive about 15 minutes before your tour to allow time for parking and walking to Victorian Garden. You may park anywhere along the side of the road but watch for small headstones and do not impede traffic. There will be a lot of pedestrian traffic onsite that day, so please drive slowly. You will check in with your guide. You do not need to bring your paper ticket. All tours are walking tours and will cover between 1 and 1.5 miles. Please try to stay with your group so you don’t miss anything. The ground will be uneven at times, so wear comfortable footwear and watch your step. Please dress for the weather. This tour will run rain or shine and will only be canceled in the event of dangerous weather. Tickets are non-refundable.If you enjoy your tour, tell your friends about Forest Home and consider leaving a review on Google or TripAdvisor.Proceeds from all tours and events help preserve and enhance the historical and natural elements of the cemetery. https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events7/banners/cd63fe20-34b6-11f0-b507-a7ce944aebcf-rimg-w572-h740-dcffffff-gmir.jpg About Forest Home Cemetery & ArboretumEstablished in 1850, Forest Home Cemetery is Milwaukee’s oldest-operating cemetery, open to people of all faiths, races and backgrounds since its inception. Forest Home is on the National Register of Historic Places and is the finest example of a Victorian-era rural garden cemetery in the Upper MidwestLarger than any City of Milwaukee park, Forest Home is the city's first accredited arboretum with more than 2,600 trees representing 100-plus species on nearly 200 acres. The land now occupied by the cemetery has been held sacred by many people for centuries. Local tribal leaders have recently visually verified two Indigenous mounds here, in sections 15 and 19.Forest Home is open daily to the public from dawn to dusk. Walkers, joggers, bicycles, leashed dogs and picnickers are welcome, as long as they are respectful of all burial sites, memorials and mounds. Each year, we host public and private historical and nature-based tours, field trips and teen programs, plus our signature community events: Memorial Day, Doors Open, Dia de los Muertos 5K & Festival, Shakespeare Festival and Spirits of the Silent City after-dark historical tours. We have many volunteer opportunities for adults and youth looking for service hours or the chance to help maintain our historic monuments, buildings and grounds.
